about

Based in the US, newcomer Hajimari has been making himself known across the Atlantic, releasing cut after cut of experimental dance music onto an unsuspecting audience. But recently he’s been basing his work around the 174bpm genre, having previously focused on the deep dubstep and garage sounds which permeated around the early 2000s. This next EP proves that he’s a diverse character, stepping into the more liquid realms of drum & bass, although it’s not just this side of the spectrum he’s able to reign over. With heavier rhythms forthcoming in the foreseeable future, 2017 is looking to be a huge year for the producer, showing how he’s able to flip the switch and stretch his repertoire throughout a variety of genres and subgenres.

Alongside label Santoku, Hajimari presents a three track EP featuring a rework than renowned producer Zero T, who’s production has become enviable across the circuit. First track ‘Sharpened’ follows plucky instrumentals and meticulously laid out note progressions, a beautiful opener which sets a standard for the rest of the EP to follow. Up next comes ‘Faithful’ featuring Nymbus, who’s an artist that Hajimari has previously collaborated with for remixes. They deliver exactly what you’d expect from the creative pair. With stabbing synth, perfectly woven drum relays and subtle bass you’re pulled into the mix, mastering a harmonic balance which is pleasant to the aural synapses. Then comes you’re subsequent standalone offering in the form of ‘Analgesic’, which is made weightier through its skits of percussion, whist creating a juxtaposition against its daintily drawn out note arpeggios. However, once the bass drops, the track is contorted into something almost unrecognisable, a darker side to the well-honed production standard Hajimari presents.

Finally comes the remix from Zero T, already an artist who’s been making waves within his field. He takes on remix duties for ‘Analgesic’, with clattering hi-hats and twisted notes taking you into his reimagining. The bass twists and turns around the track’s composition, taking you to even deeper levels, ones not seen before by its predecessor. It’s the final take on another stellar release from Santoku; one which again demonstrates it’s not just the UK where drum & bass is thriving.
