Santoku has already dominated US waters with their take on drum & bass, setting a standard within the American scene which has also infiltrated its sounds across the Atlantic. For the label’s next release, Instinkt steps forward after becoming a renowned name on imprints such as Red Light, Kill Tomorrow, Methlab, Lifestyle, Delta 9 and more pivotal record labels which have helped to define the underground scene. The trio bring their individual skills sets together, from their hometowns in Germany and Denmark, to present a cross pollination of styles which highlights just how diverse the drum & bass genre has become since its inception. Humanon also jumps on board, with one member of Instinkt joining the Slovakian and Czech team in destroying dancefloors with their own hard lined offering on Santoku’s forthcoming ‘Not Human’ EP. With an added collaboration from Interzeptor, a brand new outfit from Vienna, it’s one of the imprint’s most versatile, European deliveries to date.

Title-track ‘Not Human’ rolls out first, bringing together Humanon and Instinkt for a cut throat exploration of both outfit’s production standards. Its snaking LFO and clashing drums bring you into its heart, showing how both sets of artists go in hard and without limitations. Instinkt comes through next with the infamous Lifesize MC, who once again offers up his growling vocals throughout the tearaway record ‘Fiend’. You’re then introduced to ‘Fiend (VIP)’, which exhumes a welcome twist on the already snapping original, moving you into deeper waters whilst also rerouting the mix and pushing you through segments of antiquated, neuro infused breakdowns.

Finally you’re drawn into ‘Squad’ from both Instinkt & Interzeptor. It continues the EP’s hard lined approach, punching quicker layer after layer before it totally envelops you in its chaotic ways. With clanking percussion and a rhythm which chops and changes between every steppy set of drums, it’s the only way to end an EP which doesn’t turn down the volume from beginning to end. And that’s what makes this addition to Santoku’s discography so memorable. It not only presents the darker side of its talented roster, but also its expansion into the drum & bass world’s every corner.
